Facts of Te Tiriti O Te Waitangi


1.The tiriti was signed more than 175 years ago. 

2. Maori lost land through the native land court system, set up in 1865.

3.By the turn of the twentieth century the promises made in te tiriti had been well and truly broken.

4. It took a long time but the government started listening to the maori in 1975.   

5. For five hundred years maori had aotearoa to themselves.  

6.In late january 1840 a british official named William Hobson arrived in the bay of plenty island. He had been sent to get the maori to sign a treaty.   

7. By 1830 several hundred pakeha, most of them british were in New zealand.   

8. A company in London made plans to buy land in New Zealand to sell to the settlers for a profit.   

9.By 1845 to 1872 maori and british fought a series of battles known as the New Zealand wars. 

10.As punishment for rebelling against the government the british took millions of hectares of land from some iwi.
