There are multiple different species like tree weta, ground weta, cave weta, giant weta and tusked weta. a weta is an insect people usually mistake for crickets. There are 70 species of wetas but over 20 years ago there were over 100 species. but some of them got extinct. it takes 1 to 2 years for it to become a adult.
Description
Wetas weight up to 71 gm witch is like the size of 3 baby mouses. Its one of the biggest insects in New Zealand. There antennas are the size of the wetas bodys sometimes it can grow 2 times the size of there body. if it brakes it will grow back. They have a hard exoskeleton to keep them safe from predators. And they have holes in the side of there body they breath out of.
location
Wetas are nocturnal with means they only come out at night and sleep in the day. Wetas live in dark places like in trees holes, under stones and in trees. wetas are normally found in New Zealand.
Dynamics
The weta can hold there breath for up to 10 minutes. Females can lay 200 to 400 eggs in there life time. and 1 to 6 eggs in a group. The eggs are about 6 mm long. They can also fertilize with there poo.
